Measuring Pedestrian Level of Stress in Urban Environments: Naturalistic Walking Pilot Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Walking is the most basic and sustainable mode of transportation, many jurisdictions would like to see increased walking rates as a way reducing congestion emission levels improving public health. In United States, trips account for 10.5% all undertaken. To increase this rate, additional research on what makes people feel more comfortable while needed. Research pedestrian quality service (QOS) has sought quantify performance facilities from pedestrian’s perspective. However, impact safety countermeasures QOS roadway crossings largely unknown. The objective study discern based physiological measurements pedestrians performing normal activities in different traffic contexts. naturalistic described paper recruited 15 asked each wear an instrumented wristband GPS recorder one week. Surprisingly, findings showed no correlation between participants’ stress individual crossing locations. Instead, was associated with conditions. Higher were generally proximity collector arterial streets areas industrial mixed (e.g., offices, retail, residential) land uses. Stress tempered lower-density residential uses, well forest, park, university campus environments. outcomes can inform how planners design urban environments that reduce promote walkability.

متن کاملWalking pedestrian recognition
In recent years many methods providing the ability to recognize rigid obstacles sedans and trucks have been developed. These methods provide the driver with relevant information. They are able to cope reliably with scenarios on motorways. Nevertheless, not much attention has been given to image processing approaches to increase the safety of pedestrians in urban environments. In this paper a me...
متن کاملThe Influence of Urban Natural and Built Environments on Physiological and Psychological Measures of Stress—A Pilot Study
Environments shape health and well-being, yet little research has investigated how different real-world environmental settings influence the well-known determinant of health known as stress. Using a cross-over experimental design; this pilot study investigated the effect of four urban environments on physiological and psychological stress measures. Participants (N = 15) were exposed on separate...
متن کاملPedestrian-Level Urban Wind Flow Enhancement with Wind Catchers
Dense urban areas restrict air movement, causing airflow in urban street canyons to be much lower than the flow above buildings. Boosting near-ground wind speed can enhance thermal comfort in warm climates by increasing skin convective heat transfer. We explored the potential of a wind catcher to direct atmospheric wind into urban street canyons. We arranged scaled-down models of buildings with...
متن کاملCausality vs. Correlation: Rethinking Research Design in the Case of Pedestrian Environments and Walking
This paper investigates the causal effect of pedestrian environments on walking behavior and focuses on the issue of research design. The paper differentiates between two types of research designs: treatment-based and traveler-based. The first approach emphasizes the variation of the treatment (pedestrian environments), and generally compares distinct neighborhoods, such as urban vs. suburban o...
